Introduction

Terragen for Macintosh is a scenery generator, created with the goal of generating photorealistic landscape images and animations. Although Terragen is a continually evolving work-in-progress, it is already capable of near-photorealistic results and has been used for a wide range of commercial projects, from film and television to games and multimedia to print work. Terragen Mac uses a native user interface, as opposed to the custom user interfaces used by some similar applications. This means that the basic operation is the same as other apps you are used to and that familiarity helps you get started with Terragen more quickly.

For more information Terragen and its capabilities in general, please see the main product page.

Terragen Mac is specifically designed to give the kind of user experience Mac users expect. It follows the Apple human interface guidelines for both OS 9 and OS X. It takes advantage of a number of capabilities unique to the Mac. It has good basic AppleScript support, allowing automation and animation, currently providing more capabilities than Terragen's native scripting system. There are a number of Velocity Engine optimisations which accelerate certain functions on the G4 and newer. It uses Quartz for high quality graphics on OS X. Terragen Mac also takes advantage of QuickTime for a variety of tasks from saving images to importing images to use as terrains to creating QTVR panorama movies. Terragen Mac supports distributed animation rendering using Apple's Xgrid technology, see this page for more information.

System Requirements

The minimum system requirements for Terragen Mac are :
  • A PowerMacintosh, including all clones with PPC chips, but excluding first generation NUBUS based machines ( 6100, 7100, 8100 etc. ). There is no support for 68k machines.
  • OS 9 with CarbonLib 1.5.
  • QuickTime 4.
  • At least 32 MB of RAM for Terragen itself, meaning 64 MB would be a good base amount for your machine. Terragen runs fine on OS 9 with Virtual Memory or Ram Doubler.
  • A colour monitor supporting a resolution of 800 x 600. Terragen is designed with 800 x 600 as the minimum screen resolution.
  • Stuffit Expander is required to expand the download. If you have problems expanding the download you may need to download and installed Stuffit Expander. It is free, and can be downloaded here.

The recommended system would be :

  • OS X 10.1 or newer. Terragen runs best on OS X, and OS X 10.1 is more reliable than earlier versions. More recent versions are even better.
  • The faster the machine, with the more RAM, the better.
  • A monitor/graphics card capable of displaying millions colours. Terragen images don't look as good at less than millions of colours.
  • A 3D card. Terragen's 3D Preview works acceptably at the lowest quality on older machines ( tested on a 604/166 without a 3D card ), but you will get a much better experience if you have even a modest graphics card.
  • QuickTime 5 or newer.
