Modifying a heightfield

I did some poking around the forums and couldn't come up with any good answers, so, does anyone know a way that displacement shaders can be used to modify a heightfield but avoid modifying the area outside of it. Im trying to have flat land lead up to a rock wall. Ideally i would create a height field that I can twist, shear, stratify, add fake stones to, etc. However, I cant avoid altering the flat land around a fractal terrain if I use a distance shader and I don't know how to link a displacement shader to a heightfield.
