Hello Terragen/Planetside members.

I am new to this forum, but old to game modifying. I currently make modifications for a game called Rigs of Rods. Approximately 90% of the game's content is made by third-party users, because it is a free, open-source, and modification-friendly physics simulator. It's not the type of physics like building blocks, but simulating vehicles and their functions, creating suspensions for racing trucks, and so forth. One of the things that can be done in this game is map-making. I am making my first map for the game.

The map I am making, is being made in L3DT (Free). I am on a mission to make the Bolivian Road of Death. Here are the real pictures, and the progress:

Does it look like rubbish? I think we can all agree.

You see, the problem with L3DT is it's free. Most free stuff does not work properly. As you can see in the screenshot above, when you try to make roads on a steep surface, it affects everything around it, which deforms the terrain horrible, which is an undesirable effect. The whole point of this thread is to ask a question: can you make decent-looking roads on mountainsides, without affecting the environment, and without making it have high polygons? If the answer is yes, then I would be glad to get Terragen/Terragen 2, because L3DT is driving me nuts.

Thank you for your time.

Hi,

I don't think it's possible to accomplish with TG2 what you are trying to do. TG2 doesn't give you real-time 3D environments. The only way people use TG2 in games is for backplates and skyboxes, but you can't actually "drive" through the environment.

You can export a heightfield though can't you? I thought you could.
Figured out how to do clicky signatures

I'd suggest trying a different dedicated heightfield modeler. World Machine has some strong capabilities for road making. Geocontrol 2 does as well, I believe. You might also try the free Wilbur.

That looks exactly like what I am trying to accomplish. Also, I didn't know Terragen 2 wasn't ideal for heightmap modeling. The game I play even has a Wiki article on how to use it

Thanks for the quick reply.

The tutorial you linked to on Terragen use really seems to treat TG as more of a basic terrain manipulation and conversion program rather than a heightfield modeler. Terragen is a reasonably capable terrain editor, but dedicated systems allow more sophisticated and specific functions. In your case, the creation of a road, while it's possible in Terragen (TG2 specifically), it's probably easier in a dedicated terrain modeling program. Rendering is one of Terragen's primary strengths and since you're not planning to use Terragen rendering at all, it makes sense to focus on a more dedicated program.
