I did a quickie fluid sim last night. To use it go to the objects panel in Blender. Click on the Physics tab. There is a Fluid control area to the right near the bottom. Select the box in Layer 1 in the 3D view. This is the domain. The animation is 600 frames long. Set the Fluid control file path to a folder on your computer. Now click Bake. In about 1 hour the wave sequence should be ready to look at. You can watch the sequence by using ALT-a in Blender.

There is not any way to speed up the generation process. Blender has to calculate each frame. The result can be exported as a image sequence using a Top down orthographic camera.
