3d mesh as terrain

That's not too bad an idea. It would take some fiddling, but may be feasible...

Yes you can do this. Basically the steps are to create a model terrain in what ever shape you want in a 3d pakaje like Maya or Lightwave. Then render the model from the top down as a depth map. Once you have the depth map you can use it in TG to drive a height feild.
