Question about Postwork

Just a question about a particular technique that I've seen uses in a few images.  I can't describe it other than to say that it makes the picture look sort of "sketched" a bit like you may see from a graphic designer or in concept sketches for new cars etc.  I've seen the effect used in some 3D models that I've seen generated on other sites but was wondering if anyone knew whether a similar effect was easily achievable in 2D postwork using just Photoshop Elements.

Of course, I've probably confused you all.  An example would be visible in the foreground of Adit's pic here (really nice pic by the way, Adit, if you're reading this!):

Adit toned the effect down in the second version, but hopefuly this clarifies what I'm trying to achieve.

If Photoshop Elements can't do this, can anyone suggest a free prog that can?

Thanks,

I can't see any sketch effect in the image you mention, other than the signature design.
I am not familiar with Photoshop Elements, but if they have any "find edges" functionality, you could make a sketch effect (in a separate layer) and play with coverage, coloration and contrast. Or you could try this much simpler technique http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/pselements/ht/threshold.htm

Could you be referring to the radiating lines that appear on this image, these are sun rays and are produced automatically by TG2TP, and are maybe what you seeing as the "Sketched Look".

Regards to you.

I think I know what you're referring to, but in this case I'm not sure whether it's mostly due to post work or just a peculiar render result. But Elements should certainly be able to get you some aspects of a "sketch" look. In Photoshop I use the Artistic, Brush Strokes and Sketch filters - I'm not sure if Elements has these though. "Reticulation" is particularly cool in my opinion, and if blended with the original image it would probably create the effect you want.

This is kind of an _oil paint_ effect. You can achieve it with a suitable filter or a blurred posterize effect on a copy layer and screen combine the layer with the background. Other workarounds are possible. Just play with different filters and blurring and combining. I am certain you will find some cool effects.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.  I've had a weekend of photoshopping with some pretty fun (if not particularly challenging or impressive) results.  I may post some a bit later but I'm now in work and everything is saved on my PC at home.
