This needs something....All the populations I tried didn't look right. Any suggestions?

There is a lot of detail in this. I would try some varied bushes, clumped into small islands. This would break up the smooth areas, but keep most of them. All you need is a little life here. It's a desolate scene, play on that.

maybe some fake stones.
try some varied bushes like njeneb said, maybe change the color of the leaves to match the scene.
