Is it possible?  I've tried a number of configurations, and was able to get the shape of the rocks to show, but not the rocks themselves.

That sounds like an interesting idea; I honestly don't know how stones will react when applied to a model.  Try doing some other experiments and letting us know how it turns out :).

I have taken some time out and tried to get a fake stone shader to displace an imported object but nothing seems to work for me. Sorry.

As far as I know "Fake Stones" is designed to work on the planet surface so it will have unpredictable results (at best) on an imported object. Remember also that Fake Stones is a displacing shader and heavy displacements can cause models to "explode" currently. Feel free to continue experimenting with this of course, just keep in mind it's unlikely to yield very good results.
