a familiar face...
a default planet object in terragen, scaled to match lunar dimensions(ish!)
with data from here:
http://wms.lroc.asu.edu/lroc/global_product/128_ppd_DEM
and colour image from here: (thanks yossam!)
http://www.terragen.org/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item594
used 1 image map shader for the displacement, and 1 (with a transform shader to rotate the colour shader) for the colour surface...
any comments/crits/suggestions etc are always welcome and appreciated!
cheers

rendered larger, lowered exposure in render camera, and adjusted gamma in a higher res colour image from here:http://laps.noaa.gov/albers/sos/moon/
:)

Alcaeru

How did you know how much to rotate the colour image by? I'm trying to replicate what you did but I'm stuck at this point.

reck

That look brilliant Inky, well done!

@Jo, Alcaeru and reck... thanks folks!

@ Alcaeru, I used the familiar front side of the moon, which we all recognise (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near_side_of_the_Moon)
and used differnt rotational values (on the colour/albedo map) until I found the one that lined up the features!!
no real mathematics involved...
since the north and south poles are aligned already....
:)

Try increments of 30 degrees until the face looks right. Then use smaller increments until it looks perfect. When the moon renders with proper orientation, save it as a node clip file. Clip nodes are easily imported and hooked in.
