Request for Details on BIAS and GAIN Functions

Would it be possible to get more details about the bias and gain functions?

I use mathematical formulas in math programs to "simulate" particular parameter settings before I start renders.
So far this works pretty good, but for bias and gain I have no formula at hand and so I can only "guess" what they're doing.
