I'll tell you what. I'll spend a little time on it tonight and set up cameras at a few locations to get people started (unless you really know the area well, it can be tiresome trying to find a certain spot). Say one camera in the valley, one on Mt. Hoffman (close to the geographical center of the park), and the one at Donahue Pass. And maybe one at the top of Half Dome. I have pictures taken from most of those - not half dome, though. I couldn't stand the crowds in the valley. I do have a killer picture of El Cap taken from the valley floor, though. A camera in the valley would be cool - you could try to mimc some of Ansel Adams stuff.

Or maybe Ashunder

I know Old_Blaggard talks about being able to post stuff there. :)
Heheh... yes, I have the power :D.  If you send the .ter file to me via email (8MB should be fine through email), I can put it up in our terrain section and post a link here.

Cool - give me a bit of time to get a tgd created with the cameras and I'll send it off.

This could be fun Recreating some old stomping grounds. :)

Right - I just posted an email to the webmaster at ashunder address with .ter file and .tgd containing the camera locations described above. I'll post more camera clip files later. There are a few more locations it'd be cool to have - Mt. Conness, Tenaya Lake, maybe Saddlebag Lake. I'm also trying to pinpoint the location of Hetch Hetchy dam. The location is in the Yosemite .ter. The canyon is easy enough to find, but I want to get the dam located as precisely as I can.

Harvey - I think that Oshyan gets those messages, and since he's a really busy man, if you send it to palmcarp@yahoo.com I could put them up myself.  Otherwise you might have to wait a while for Oshyan to get around to it ;).

ooops - sorry, guys. If I'd been thinking I'd have sent it to the right address. What can I say - I was still working on my first cup of coffee.

old_blaggard

All right, guys, here's the link.

If you want me to post a thumbnail (ie an example image using this terrain) let me know and send me one.  Maybe we should do a little contest on who makes the best thumbnail image :P.

Count me out of the contests. A man's gotta know his limitations...

;D

<edit>

I was just wondering about how 3DEM handled fitting data to the allowed Terragen heightfield sizes, and how much detail was potentially being lost. Found the information I was looking for in the 3DEM help file. It seems I could probably create a more precise heightmap with a little work, so I may redo this in the next couple of days.

old_blaggard

All right, just email me an update if you come up with one.

3DEM almost always does resampling, either up or down. Where possible it's better to use a tool that allows you to get a 1:1 crop straight from the DEM data. Global Mapper is ideal for this but it's rather pricey.

Harvey Birdman

Global Mapper is probably out - if I dropped $279 on a non-essential piece of software at the moment I'd probably be sleeping in the shed for a week.

;D

Too bad they cripple the demo so - it's not even worth downloading.

I'll see what I can do with 3DEM. It sounds as if you can get a 1:1 sample rate in theory, but the UI for selecting a region looks pretty crude. I suspect it'll prove to be a bit of a pain.

Oshyan

Yeah, that's the thing, the selection UI is really poor unfortunately. If only you could type in a numeric selection area in pixels. I was in touch with the dev a couple years back to add support for larger terrains now that TG 0.9 and TG2 both can go above 4097, unfortunately he didn't have time when I last talked to him and I imagine the same is true now. Nonetheless it might be worth contacting him and seeing if he can put a few enhancements in...
