Hi all,

I work for a company that produces web design tools, web templates and various icons and graphical packs for web use.
Now we would like to produce surreal and photorealistic images of terrains, planets, astronomy, galaxies, etc.
Possibly you have some images you'd like to sell to us or produce for us (exclusively).
We are open to suggestions and variety of topics. Simply submit your offers, whether for existing images you may have, or your portfolio with proposition for what topics you could cover for us.
This could also become a full-time remote job or just a per-item freelancing project for anyone needing extra cash.

Please note that I have not used Terragen and have no idea about the amount of work needed to produce any particular image, therefore we may have to decide on the pricing based on comparing submitted offers.

If interested, please contact ph_terragen@prog-net.com

Thank you,
Paul

I am certainly interested Paul but would need a little more info about the comapany, like a web site address to check out what your company does. Many people in the CG industry have been burned by seemingly incredible jobs where thier work has been taken and no payment given.

So, if you can provide some more info I will be in touch. I would probably work based on a per hour basis for freelance work but that can be discussed when we talk more.

somebody

Definitely, just some of the information may be confidential and rather than getting approval from my boss or figuring out what I can post publicly or not, I would feel safer to just provide more information via the email address above.
Therefore please feel free to contact me and I'll provide more info.

BTW, I totally understand your concerns, we do work with several freelancers and sometimes pre-pay for work to develop trust.

Thank you,
Paul

Well I've sent Paul an e-mail yesterday, so we'll see.

Please tell us if it's worthwhile, Martin.

I am waiting on your opinion also, T-U.

I am not interested in doing the job, but I am interested in hearing if these posts can be trusted. Please let us know.
It has been eaten.

I've looked over the info Paul sent me and I must say I'm not really sure where the art we do here fits into thier business model. The company appears to be your standard web template design job and given what most of us do here I am finding it hard to understand exactly what we could provide.

Paul, perhaps you could expand upon what it is that you think we might be able to provide?

somebody

We started with creating web templates, then icons and photos for those templates, now trying to expand to broader graphics, illustrations and photo packages. Somewhat like stock graphics but bundled together. We are looking for any type of images that we can produce or acquire for distribution.
For example we work with illustrators who create thousands of icons and illustration on every topic imaginable. We also work with 3D designers who put together various scenes from variety of 3D models we purchase, then simply render them. We also work with graphics designers that assemble various composites in Photoshop.
One of the topics we'd like to cover are landscapes and outer space, which obviously we cannot easily photograph. When I found Terragen I assumed that it's a product for quickly generating variety of terrain and planetary scenes, but I'm just starting to understand that there are no predefined scenes here and not a marketplace for them, like for 3D objects.
Someone pointed to me that I could just purchase E-on Vue and various sceneries from http://www.cornucopia3d.com/store.php?first=1&sel_dir=Scenes&level=0&sel_type=Scenes.  Those scenes seem to be great, created by veterans of the software, and probably each took long time to create.

I wish Terraview offered similar ready-to-go scenes because that's what many people may need, not a complicated software that requires long time investment to create something great with. I opened Terraview, tried to understand what to do, then closed it in 15 minutes.
And I'm assuming that 10 years from now we'll see even better products that do more out of the box. Vue seems to be more successful and investing heavily into making advancements. For example their Ozone plugin advertises 100 predefined atmospheres: http://www.ozone-plugin.com/

I also just found SpaceEngine and it already seems much easier for some scenes - just navigate around the universe and take snapshots.

At this point I've come to understand that Terragen may not offer sufficient value to us on its own, without a lot of work involved. But I'm still open to ideas ad proposals. For example someone may have developed some scenes and just sell us distribution rights for X number of images for $Y dollars.
I guess "where the art fits into our business model" may be irrelevant if we're simply offering to pay for whatever anyone may want to sell us. That's the perfect business model for many freelancers we work with, though again, I understand that producing great results with Terragen may be much more labor intensive to be comparable with other types of illustrations we acquire. I'm still open to ideas, while in the meantime moving onto testing other solutions, some of our freelancers may also start manually putting together some cool terrain and planetary composites in Photoshop (there are tons of great tutorials on the web). I just wish Terragen was built to easily fulfill that growing need :-)

Thanks,
Paul

Ahh, now I understand what it is you are trying to achieve Paul.

In fairness you might want to look at places like Turbosquid, an online broker for thousands of scenes and models.

I would advise you steer well clear of Cornucopia3d, they are in fact owned by E-on software and thier terms and conditions of use are open to a whole lot of problems including one that would allow them to use any image or animation created by you without your permission to promote Cornucopia3d or E-on Software.

In all fairness however I think you need to understand the scale of work involved in creating some scenes/models. As an example my average hourly rate is around £20-£30 and to create a complex scene might take up to a week and for complaex models anything up to a month, so you can see we are running into the thousands if you are looking for exclusive rights to the models/scenes. I certainly would not entertain the idea of a royalty based payment system, ie the number of times you sold an a particular scene as this system would invariably be open to abuse or misinterpretation.

You may in fact be better off buying your own 3d package and learning to model/texture/render/animate yourself, while the learning curve may be steep the results and ultimately the satisfaction are well worth the effort.

Feel free to drop me a line if you want any advice, it's a minefield out there.

Thank you for following up Andrew, I understand much more now :-)
