Hmmm, I like the idea but I think you need a better tree.
Could you take into a 3d package and sub-divide it to smooth out the angular branches?

i found a free dead tree obj. file, i assume it's not the best one and i don't know yet how to remove the leaves from
a xfrog tree  but i think i saw a post explaining you need to change colour  or opacity on leaf shader or something like that

Set the opacity on your leaf shader to 0.
