Another attempt at a night atmosphere. Obviously, the 'sun' is supposed to be a moon, and I can easily Photoshop that in. Not bad, but I think the foreground could be a bit brighter, and the low mist/fog didn't show up as well as I had hoped. Still, not bad for only 4ish hours of rendering. I do like the stone house, though. I think the weird lighting artifacts are from the reflective shaders I used on the house, b/c they never show up in other renders with the same object. Oh yeah, and I forgot to add stars  ::)

Nice work. The house seems a bit too reflective, but otherwise is pretty cool. The atmosphere with the subtle haze is especially nice.

For the moon you could use a simple planet object with an appropriate texture and set it to luminous. It won't provide a lot of actual light unless it's blown out like this, so if you want detail in it you can use fill lights to provide ambient lighting instead. I have a pretty good moon scene going that works this way, based on a texture of the real moon.

i've tried using texture maps for a moon, but they never look right, which is strange

Nice moon.  Nice lighting.  Have you tried spherical settings?  And there's a couple of places that actually have free spherical maps for the moon.
So this is Disney World.  Can we live here?

Should be something around her on it.  Basically, you use spherical mapping in your Image Shader.
