Hello, I play an online sim game and would like to use terragen classic for backgrounds for personalized images. These are completely non-comercial on my part and are created for either my own use or for sale to other players for game cash which cannot be translated into real world currency in any form.

However, the game staff want me to credit the backgrounds to the terragen devs, despite the program being free for non-commercial work. As an artist, this doesn't sit well with me, for obvious reasons.

Would it be possible for a staff/dev to make a quick statement saying that it's acceptable use and I don't need to credit them for what I create?

For completely non-commercial use we do not require artists to credit our software. Your use may be a bit of a gray area (an "edge case") because you mentioned you can earn in-game credits, which is a form of potentially "commercial" gain. But I think it's fair to err on the side of free use at this point. Just keep in mind if you ever do earn real-world money, or anything that can be or is exchanged for real world goods or services, then you need to register.

In my opinion it is gentlemanly to credit the software if you make money using it be it Euros, Pounds or bitcoins. ;)

You can always put the software's name as well as your own after all.

In regards to registration, how would I go about doing that, just out of curiosity? The links on the terragen classic page are broken and simply lead to an error page. On top of that, the "buy" link only lists Terragen 3.

Terragen Classic is extremely old and no longer supported. We encourage people to upgrade to Terragen 3 where possible. You can contact us at support@planetside.co.uk to discuss further if needed.

Ah. I dabbled in terragen 2 and found it too complex/the UI highly confusing, even with tutorials. I was able to make an image, but only after a great deal of frustration. I'm guessing that terragen 3 is similar, just with added features. It can produce some beautiful images, but I'm afraid it's out of my skill level to learn.

It's unfortunate that I won't be able to register Classic in the future. I was hoping to eventually render larger images.

Eurynome, it all depends on what you expect from TG. If you want to make money with it (someplace in the future) it might be problematic if you can't get a grip of it. In this case it is better to find something else.

As far as I'm concerned I'm only a hobbyist and probably will never learn to create such images as e.g. Dune or Hannes but even with my very limited knowledge on the subject I can produce something that I'm quite fond of. :) So once again - it depends on what you want to do with TG in the future. Don't give up! It will be great if you could stay with us!

I've been using Classic for many years and have no plans of simply dropping out of the community. I enjoy playing with the program far too much to do so. I might give Terragen 2 or 3 a try sometime in the future.
