Just wondering if anyone has updated their World Machine to version 3 and if so what are your thoughts?

Yead I did and had a little bit of play with it.

The new instancer is cool and I made some cool looking noise with it just by following the example included.
Stephen generally supplies WM with great examples!

The local space functionality is also new and I have to think about situations where to use it as it isn't really clear to me yet.

I hope though that WM3 itself will also contain some improvements on "simulation" areas, like rivers and improved erosion patterns.
So far it has evolved in many ways to be more art-directable, controllable and versatile, but at this point I feel the balance should be shifted back towards natural phenomena simulation rather than scene handling/versatility/controllability/etc...

Just my 2 cents

do you mean 2.3?
I just checked, still not native for me. I Always check when one of you mentions something.

Thanks TU. I'm thinking about the upgrade.
So this is Disney World.  Can we live here?

OK, thanks. Still not sure why they wont port though. Must not be enough interest or potential users?

Porting to Mac is a *HUGE* project Badger. And it's hard to determine what the actual potential Mac platform userbase would be before you do so. Our Mac userbase is certainly a fraction of our Windows users (25% maybe?).

I understand. Im not pissed or anything. I realize most of the world (like 98% or something) uses windows. So thats where the market is and thats where the money will be. Im just one of the few in the world who does not like windows ;)

But you got me curious to what 25% of TG users is in real number! How many people do use TG (paid)? Very curious about that!... But if thats a secret you need to keep, its understandable.

On porting to Mac. Well if you programers are going to make things that blow peoples minds, then don't complain when they exspect you to beable to do anything they can imagine!   ;D

Well, we don't actually have reliable platform numbers at this point. It's data we used to collect and is now just reflected in number of downloads of each platform. This is less of an issue since we support both platforms already. :D

In terms of download numbers, there is an interesting difference between free version vs. paid version users. For registered (paying) users, Mac is about 35%, with Windows being the rest, 65%. That's actually a pretty good ratio considering the Windows platform dominance (which is more like 90% vs. Mac 8-10%). But the traditional artist/creative leaning of the Mac platform may play into that. For free version downloads, Mac is more like 10%, which actually reflects the general OS distribution much more closely. So that's quite interesting indeed.

Now download numbers don't necessarily correspond to actual numbers of users on each platform, but they're a reasonable estimate. I'm generalizing again here but what we might be seeing is the willingness of users of each platform to buy software coming into play in these ratios. Mac users have, I believe, been historically more willing to pay for software, and this is true as well of iPhone vs. Android (and presumably vs. Windows phone, though I'm not sure). Then again it could just be that Mac users download their software 3x more frequently than Windows users. ;)

Ghehe, well the latter makes kind of sense isn't it.
Due to Apple's pricing regime their customers are of increased chance to be the more wealthy ones.
