I discovered by just by trying it that LW Modeler will convert *.3DS files but I don't know about *.MAX. For a 3DS you just drag and drop the file on a shortcut to Modeler on the desktop. A panel comes up. You adjust the options and press the okay button. I usually end up with a model that is two or more orders of magnitude too large and sometimes textures are not associated correctly. But I can usually get a working model in a short amount of time. I think more than one file format has the *.max extension. If 3D Studio Max ever used that extension it was a long time ago.

To use a Max file you have to use 3D Studio Max (i think you know this already).
So you can use the demo for this or someone who has Max helps you.
I don't have it but here are others who have it if i remember right.

Kadri, was MAX the original format for 3D Studio Max and, if so, what year did they start using the file extension 3DS? If you look up the MAX file extension on Google you also get:

"Saved file created by Datel's Action Replay MAX, a PlayStation 2 (PS2) program used for applying cheats to PS2 games and creating PS2 saves; contains the saved state of a PS2 video game; can be saved to a hard drive or transferred to a PC using a USB flash drive."

and

"Image imported via scanner or created by ScanSoft PaperPort scanning software; saved in a proprietary format used by ScanSoft software."

and

"Scanned image or text document saved by OmniPage scanning software; recognizes characters and words and detects page layout information using OCR software."

3DS is an older format from the 3D Studio DOS days Pablo.
3DS is universally well recognized and was used very much in the old days. Not so much anymore.

Max files are more like full scene files that have many things in it and is one of the reason no other software then Max can open it.
I hate that file format.

So 3DS is equivalent to LWO and MAX is equivalent to LWS. Makes sense. Bonk Bonk Bonk (that was me using a mallet to pound it into my brain so that I will remember it). So both formats are currently used by the SW?

(S)oft(W)are. HW is (H)ard(W)are.

:)
I doubt that anyone uses 3DS other then for old objects but yes it should support it.

Thanks for the replies!

Maybe someone can convert the file for me into a .obj?
