Try looking at the documentation and basic tutorials on this site.  You can use the Terragen 2 Documentation, and there is also a tutorial about migrating from TG 0.9 in the user created tutorials section.
http://www.terragen.org - A great Terragen resource with models, contests, galleries, and forums.

Yea is can be a technical process depending on how you want the terrain to look.
The world is round... so you have to use spherical projection.

Download this and save it to your hard-drive.  Go through it a few times.  It's one of the best tutorials for a beginner - http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/tg2/tg2tp_overview.pdf and I look at it from time to time to just understand the scope of what can be done in TG2.
So this is Disney World.  Can we live here?

Simplest way to get started is to add a "Power Fractal" or "Alpine Fractal" from the terrain tab. The default "Hightfield Load" and "Heightfield Generate" need either a pre-existing elevation map or a generated fractal map to work. If you not using either of these then you can safely delete them.
Good luck
