Changing the patch size does not fix it. I have two Compute terrain nodes, one after the first larger displacement, and a second at the end of the stack which is fed into the population.

Ah, it's the pop you want to change, I missed that. What if you rotate the population by X or Z? seems a bit strange, but you never know...
