In TG we talk about these things as square/rectangular noise. But I am looking for stuff to use in sculpting. The links are just basic idea, but I am looking for some nice high quality alphas and hopefully a source with lots of choices and variations on things

I know how to make things my self, but I would really like to buy some tools from a pro who does things like this really really well. There are things available for free on line of course. But I would like to find some really nice pacs of stencils (black white maps). At this point I don't mind paying, I think its worth it to me for some nice resources. JUSt would save a bunch of time and energy

If you happen to remember a source site for this sorta thing, please throw out a link for me.

Here is an image I found that shows what I hope to find a LARGE pool of resources for... so this kinda thing. really just thinking about natural surfaces right now, but Ill look at any link generally related.

Nice request!
You could maybe create custom bump/displacement brushes from images like:

I think that I might try to knock a few together in cs3!
I'll post more links as I find them...
:)

Nice references. The arifcreations tutorial was very interesting.

Well, its cool stuff!

I finally got my self a pinterest account. I got sick of the sign up pop-up window blocking my view of things i found through google. If you don't already have a pinterest account, get one! Then type "alpha map mudbox" (z-brush also will come up with mud).
lots of awesome stuff. Only, unfortunately, while the images are great, they don't tend to lead to the resources... Just peoples work mostly.

I know for a fact that there are packs of the things I am looking for, for sale on line. I know because I remember seeing them many times over the years. Just now that I know how to do this stuff and would rather buy it to save time and energy, I can't find what I am looking for at all. But on pinterest I can see hundreds of examples of the kinds of things I am looking for. Guess Ill have to go through a bunch of em' and hope a few lead to a site that sells them... Or just suck it up, and spend a week just making my own resources library :-\ baaa. Thats no fun.

By the way,

Is there a proper name for rectangular rock formations? I mean, like hoodoos for example, is a word that if you google will give many examples of things that all look like hoodoos. But "rectangular rock" is not very specific or good to search. I am just curious if there is a proper geological term that will help me find on target inspiration images and reference images of the kinds of stones I am looking for.

Probably just too general a thing. But what the heck. If anyone knows.

I would think they are just thicker, more (compacted) dense rock strata layers. Hard Rock Strata might be an easy to recall term.

TheBadger

Ill try it, thanks.

Here is a tut I found through pinterest http://www.philipk.net/tutorials/materials/stonerough/stonerough.html rock texture how to. Someone had a thread about how to make textures recently. There are so many people with so many styles and techniques in PS, that it never hurts to post a tut like this, I always learn something new from them, almost always. And its on rocks specifically so here is as good a spot as any.

Here is the other tuts by that guy. If you scroll to the bottom of all his tuts, you can download a .PSD of the maps with all there parts on separate layers... Very cool of him!
