Trees are not so hot for close ups but they will do for the test. I might carry on and finish this one.

I don't think there's anything wrong with trees. Maybe just more species of the trees... You should add some shrubs between them so that looks more diverse.
Also, don't you guys think that since TG3 it is even easier to get good-looking god rays?

There was not anything mentioned in the changes list about changes to the Atmosphere shader. However, it is something worth trying all the same.
