Look at those first two images! Zinger! Both the grass/shrubbery and trees look great! What do you guys/gals (do we have any gals in the forum?) think?

That first image looks really nice. But I wonder what they're showing here - Modo-modelled trees and/or grass? Or is this just a renderer demonstration? Are they using instancing? I'm a bit unclear on what has been done with Modo (besides the rendering obviously) and what the pitch is. In other words if this is just say XFrog vegetation being rendered by Modo then big whoop, we've seen Cinema 4D doing the same thing just as well or better for years (same goes for Maya, etc.). But if these are Modo-modelled, or it's showing some particular instancing technology, then it's more interesting...

Just for comparison, you can see a bunch of Cinema 4D (and some TG2 and Vue) vegetation renders here: http://www.wallis-eck.de/2005/index.php?page=Stills&gallery=./Natur/Landschaft

From what I have gathered it seems like the first image's grass was built with instances, displacements, mesh paints, and/or stencil mapping... I have not seen anything about the trees, but I know its possible to create trees like that in modo (http://www.luxology.com/gallery/image.aspx?id=2081) Oshyan, I am not an amazing modeler by any means so I couldnt even begin to explain whats going on in the images, its pure speculation and detective work :D.
On page two "Philip Lawson" posted this image:

and then said:
QuoteMaking this scene was nice as item handling has improved greatly in 301. I created a flat plane and sculpted a few mounds. I then used the free xfrog tree and painted it on for a laugh.

I cant remember the exact render time, but it was roughly 40-60mins for the 1080p res render and 32AA + DOF + GI but I didnt spend much time, I just set it up quickly, hit F9 and went out for dinner hehe.

I changed the leaves from transparent amount to the stencil mapping.

This does not say much for the first image though because it was created by Mark Brown.
