Sorry about your motherboard!

To clarify a few things...

First, Defer Atmo is on by default for a reason. We do intend it to be the new preferred rendering method. Yes, it can be more challenging to get ideal render times with it, but in theory it should be possible to make it faster or a similar render time for a similar level of quality. The key is it requires different (not necessarily more) knowledge and understanding of how to tweak render settings, a change of perspective so to speak. If you want to use higher AA for e.g. plants this is OK, just *use more adaptive AA* and *set the noise threshold appropriately* (i.e. reduce it if you have noisy clouds, increase it if your clouds are slow rendering and don't need as many samples), while generally keeping cloud quality at 1.

Second, if you are using Defer Atmo, do *not* increase atmo samples the way you would without Defer Atmo! Using 64 atmo samples with defer is generally "insane" and not needed in the vast majority of cases, especially depending on what your AA setting is. I typically use 16 or even *fewer* atmo samples (like 8!) and AA of 4-6 or for plant-heavy scenes AA of 8-16, with 1/64 first samples, and noise thresholds that vary depending on scene contents. But the main thing is don't just raise atmo samples like you might normally do to combat noise. Defer Atmo should render pretty clean atmospheres, and your main likely source of noise in skies is the new cloud shading, which requires more samples to get clean results due to the more complex lighting it simulates. If you do find that atmo is a source of noise, increase atmo samples *slowly*, i.e. from 16 to 24 or 32 - do *not* go straight to 64!

Sorry if I've "shouted" too much in the above, but I hope the message is clear and useful. :) Defer Atmo will take some getting used to, and we will work on our side to make it easier to use and easier to get fast, high quality results consistently.
