Damn, what if I render the planet as a separate render layer...? Can I merge it during postwork then? Is that what render layers are all about? I don't think the render has any transparent alpha layers though...

You don't have to go to complex things all the time.
Maybe a normal animation(if it is an animation) and then just a separate one with only the moon with everything other black (or green or blue) or with a Alpha image etc. might do it too for example.
