Lateral displacement of sphere

How can I laterally (horizontally) displace a sphere object? I know it requires those computed normals (whatever the name is) but I don't know where and how to apply it. Regardless of where I put it in the internal network it doesn't do anything. The surface is just smooth.

Did this work out  N-drju? Just curious as to what you were attempting ....been playing around a bit with lat.-disp. myself lately.
