Why is it TG can't make consistent gradients with smooth step / bevel? Is it due to clamping under the hood?

For exmaple, if you take a smooth step SSS at 100% and apply it to a cloud or terrain, you should get a perfect dome, but you get an extended distorted peaked dome.

First image is a 100% gardient to boundary (3rd party), second image is TG 100% smooth step to boundary.

Maybe it has to do with lineair or not lineair. With a bias scalar you adjust a little.

Could be, will give it a try some more cloud testing.  Need some gradually sloping clouds with a tight dropoff (not straight, but not gradual) and it's not playing nice in my project.

If you are applying it to a cloud and want direct, linear response, make sure to disable "Taper top and base", "softer base", etc.
