Since the Cliff competition I've had a hankering to go back and rework some old scenes to see how much I, and Terragen itself, have improved. The base terrain is mostly the same with the exception of the mountain top peaking up in the background which was sent through World Machine to perform some erosion and generate a snow mask. All the shaders have been updated, lighting and camera angle slightly tweaked, and eight populations of plants were added to give better vegetation variety. I still need to create a mask for the scree to match the distribution in real life since it is rather more extensive than what I currently have.

The first image is the new version of the scene and a second is a side by side comparison.

Yes, that new version is much better isn't it? The scale of the whole scene is more impactful.

Good composition. I particularly like the deep cutting on some of the upper hillside. Both are wonderful images in my opinion, but nicer erosion in redo.

Kadri

They both look great.
It might be only me probably but i like the older one more actually.
The new one with the more smooth surfaces looks like it lacks detail to my eye.
And the grass looks more random in the last one.
Sorry. I thought not to write but that looked not honest because i like your work very much and felt i had to say it.
It is subjective too in the end.

I like the new ground colour variation, though maybe it's scale could be increased. I also really enjoyed the original snow, it seems very natural, just like the patchy snow melting off our mountains above me right now.

They're both really good but I as well as Kadri like the original mainly for the mountains...they look more like mountains you'd see in late spring/early summer like this image seem to me to be.

Just noticed the lake, subtle change, but the effect is much nicer. Looks like there is a lot going on below the surface.

Thanks for the comments everybody! I've made a first go at a scree mask based on google maps images and am starting to do some test renders to see if it looks right. The trickiest thing to get right will probably be the rock surfacing due to the complex, slightly warped, and well eroded strata that makes up most of the steeper slopes.

I've finally gotten an update together. I was going to update a week and a half ago but the TGD got corrupted and I couldn't find a way to fix it, so, back to square one.

The scree and tree masks are controlled by painted shaders based on google earth images. One of the shrub populations is glowing a bit in the shadows so I'm going to have to fix that. I also want to improve the snow coverage in both the mid-ground and the background and mess around with the brightness and contrast.

bobbystahr

well  maybe going back to square 1 was a good idea...I see no flies on this render...beauty, in a word.
