What could cause this? I have a high index of refraction based on steel, 2.757. I have 360 detial, as well a ray detail multiplier to 1. I don't want "exact" sharp reflections, so I tried the  ray trace reflection softness to 1.

Seems to be created by the reflection softness. Any ideas how to counteract this?

Softness of 1 is extremely high, you need far more samples to pull that off. Better restrict it to 0.004 or thereabouts, and gradually increase.

Yeah, even 0.1 creates about the same sized blocks. Seems to just not be compatible with default 4 samples anywhere above 0.00x region, which doesn't provide the desired look. In general, Stainless Steel is proving actually hard to mimic.

The soft reflections at the moment are... not great. We have a better solution in development that will come with the Path Tracer. In the meantime Ulco is right, you need to use very small values, and relatively high samples for anything above values like 0.05. The slider for that value, or the value range in general, is not well calibrated there. But the newer solution will be much better anyway.

I have in the past achieved soft reflections with "reflection softness" turned OFF but using a VERY fine and small displacement on the surface. Not always effective.

Oh I see. Can't wait to see what all the Path Tracer brings for rendering.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give it a shot. Also, lovely scene.
