everytime I use mask to distribute population....it keeps crashing.....

this is the mask I am using....

I am making a dome and trying to populate trees around the dome

any ideas???

I have been using tif mask's with BigBens mask setup quite abit with no problems, in fact I have used up to 7 2049 masks without a crash, here is a link to the thread http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=864.0.
I have not used jpg masks at all before, perhaps tif will do it

It's definitely worth looking into the format used. Also it depends on how you're applying the mask. Through Camera projection is known to have some issues for example. So some more details, besides just the mask, would be helpful.

I just did a quick jpg circle mask test using an image map shader to control the distribution, no problems with the jpg. But it was a real simple setup, 1 surface layer, one image map shader, one population....perhaps a tgd is needed. SeerBlue

mask is in jpg format

I am using blend shader to mask the population

and I am using Plan Y projection type....

I can't help but think this may have more to do with some of your other crazy population settings as seen in the other thread. ;D Does it *only* crash when you have it setup to be masked? Perhaps with a population set to be outside the planet radius, a "PlanY" projection is confusing it...

no this is before I had the crazy setup....I tired using bigben's technique and it seems to be working except for the populator going over 100 (currently at 184%)

when it crashed...the population area was 1000 x 1000 at (0,0,0)

Well, if we can get a .tgd to reproduce it with the provided mask that would let us diagnose further. Otherwise it seems like a mystery, but keep hacking on it! ;D

You could try a function mask for this.

HB's pie filter...

or you could place a camera in the centre of the dome and link it to two distance shaders.

This might get around any potential issues with plan y projection beyond the planet surface??
