Wet Stones

Attempt at shading wet stones...Learned a couple of interesting things, mainly that it takes forever to render raytraced reflections on these, but that it is totally worth it since it's much more convincing looking.

Yeah with textured stones with subtle displacement like that plus the larger curvature in geometry of the stones creates huge fields of point of reflections at different angles every millimeter. "

I'm particular on the second one. I like the lower light (or darker textures?)

I suspect that it is a different lighting - and I agree with the choice 2b :)
Both have a photographic look and a nice DoF.

Thanks guys :) The renders are the same, actually, just post-processed differently. The second one is processed the least. The first one is just made brighter and I did a contrast adjustment.

I like the extra brightness in the shadows and midtones of the first one, and the only thing I don't like about it is the clipped highlights. Can you boost it without affecting the highlights? The closer it gets to 1.0, the less I'd want to change it.

EDIT: I meant the first one.

Very nice. I like the diversity of stones and textures. Perhaps there's a way to mimic RT reflections by using 2 sets with an angle difference, and slightly different (more bluish) tints as reflection colors. Probably a lot faster.
It's too bad there are always stones that don't come out well (flat, with distorted texture), not in the least decreasing the overall beauty of this, however.

I wonder if a white plane behind the camera would bounce some light into those shadows?

The subtle DoF really adds to the realism.
