Displacement smoothing settings.

I had a play last night with an alternative method fo removing fractal detail from the terrain where my rivers are. I made some minor improvements but I'm still guessing what I'm doing. Can someone please explain what the other settings in the Effects tab are for intersect underlying.

  • Intersection zone
  • Intersection shift
  • Min intersection shift

I'm sure I could make some more improvements if I knew what they were actually doing.

PS. The method I'm trying is based on my old river carving method... masked negative displacement with slightly smaller masked positive displacement. What I'm trying to do is fill the river bed with a smoother surface using the positive displacement.

Okay, I am not quite sure with my points, but I give it a try:

With intersection zone you can modify the range that is given by a breakup (altitude, slope, fractal). Changing this value makes the effected area of terrain smaller/larger

The shifts are for pulling up/pushing down the intersection. I guess (!) along the normal.

Thanks. I think the first setting widens the are to calculate for the smoothing.... but I'll have to re check. Things weren't working as expected because I still had another surface layer providing some displacement (it seemed to be too fine for fractal detail on the terrain). I'll retest now that I've removed it and can see what's happening  ;)
