RIP Renderosity's Terragen Forum (Gallery remains!)

A lot of users that are fairly new may or may not know the history of Renderosity's Terragen forums. In short Rendo served as the main hub for Version Classic users in the beginnings of the Terragen community in the early to mid 2000's (along with Yahoo Chat). Many amazing artists changed the way this program was used, creating incredible works that seemed to create a positive cult like following for the members, it was an amazing time for me and for many others as well. Over the years Rendo's Terragen scene remained focused on Version Classic. Then came the advent of social media ... traffic in the gallery and forums continued to taper off as it did with many other forums at the time. As a moderator there for 10 years I have watched this happen along with the push back from Rendo's administration to support Terragen with promotional banners on the site as well shutting down pitches for challenges was the writing on the wall. Quite simply this was because the Site's main focus was on Daz and Poser as was where the $ is ... in their Marketplace sales. So that's it, I know there are plenty of old skool members & lurkers here that would like to be notified of this. Danny

*Important: Any member who has a gallery over there and you don't have the originals to those images go and download them as they are looking to delete the gallery completely. I will know for sure Tuesday

[Moderator update: Renderosity management have decided to keep the gallery online for now.]

Shame to see it go.
It was a useful and valuable resource.

Definitely sad to see, the passing of an era. Pretty lame that they even want to remove the gallery there, they could at least leave it up even if they don't allow new uploads or something. Yeesh.

Archive.org *may* maintain a backup for walking down memory lane in the future: http://web.archive.org/web/20150905214252/https://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/?section_id=22

I believe if you crawl recent backups that still have live links, it'll take snapshots of the pages you visit within the wayback machine.

This is pretty sad. I'd archive the forum rather than delete it. Too many art hosts have just dropped off the face of the earth. Shadowness was a huge one, being in direct competition with DevientArt giving it's "Adult and Professional" (you actually had to have peer reviewed quality artwork to maintain an account) artists a new home centered around them. Than, the creator just decided to close it and move on. Didn't decide to sell the source code, or make it open source for the community the maintain (many of us involved offered including staff). Was a sad time.

IMO art should be preserved. It was the point of these places to go to begin with. If anything they could extract all artwork, name the files according to authors and dump on a source that is foreseen to be maintained like imgur or something.

Well sad but not unexpected. I have all my stuff locally so not worried about losing the gallery...just the friends there...I did 5 years running freestuff and all the time I was there doing Imagine3D...dunno if that's even there as we got imagine3d.org now run by an Imagine user so it's good to be out of the Poser Pit...dunno if I could look at a Vicki with a sword render even now many years later.

I didn't have internet for the like 2 months he gave people to backup, so I lost my gallery. I had did a lot of work there and was hoping to continue it, but he just insisted the codebase was so outdated it wasn't worth it. Which I didn't feel was true since it was revolutionizing a lot of gallery features that DeviantArt than adopted. How ironic.

Just an FYI, Renderosity admin has decided to leave the galley portion open and active. I am very happy about that. Oshyan if you can change the title of the tread to only reflect this.

Glad to hear that Danny. I've updated the thread title and added a moderator note to the bottom of your original post. Note that updating the thread title does not update the titles of the replies.
