Hello, I've looked for a similar issue on the forum and can't find this one.

When I attempt to add a population of trees on my mountains, I basically get a large square of trees covering mountains and valley alike.  I use a Distribution shader and assign it to the tree population node.  In the Distribution settings I've tried both Altitude settings and Slope in combination and individually.  There must be something I'm doing wrong here.

My understanding is that, if I set a maximum altitude, the trees won't be above that level and will be everywhere within the area I selected but only below that value.  The same would be true of minimum and slope.  That is not occurring though.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you

Hopefully, you may be able to use the attached information. I wrote it after experiencing a number of problems; and, after conferring with those of a lot more experience, I successfully was able to render both plant populations and single object placement. Let me know if it works for you.

Just a quick check before you delve into Bob's tutorial. You've got the Distribution shader in the Use Density shader slot on the Populator's Distribution tab, and Use Density shader checkbox is ticked. You've ticked Preview Instances and clicked the Populate Now button. If yes to all of the above, proceed to Bob's tutorial.

I hope I realise I don't exist before I apparently die.

I did not have the 'Use' box checked. I realized that after I posted.  It seems so obvious now :-)   Thanks for the tute and the time guys.
