Hi,
I'm completely new here and have only stumbled upon Terragen as I am meant to be teaching it to 9/10 year olds.  The teaching plan that I am using wants me to use Terragen 0.9.  Our IT have installed an unregistered version of 0.9 and I have realised that I have to add files for it to generate the terra.

What I would like to know is should I persevere with 0.9 - it looks relatively easy to use - or should I just download 4?
The problem we have is that whatever we use it cannot be heavy on the laptop/pc.

I really hope that there is someone out there who can help with advice and point me in the right direction.

For basic terrains, Terragen is quite scalable, it just may take longer render wise if you're doing crazy things. I am not sure if this is true with 0.9. But it is 32bit only so it can't be too overwhelming on 64bit systems with even relatively modern CPUs.

That being said, 0.9 may be easier to learn for 9/10 year olds, but Terragen Free has a lot more to offer including basic math functions which can be used to demo basic trig functions and how they effect terrain. In my opinion there is far more to teach from and demonstrate with Terragen 4  Free, or education licenses for your school computers provided by Planetside.

I don't really know what 0.9 has to really offer teaching wise. It's pretty rudimentary as a terrain generator. Though there were some cool plugins for it.

Hi MrF!

Thanks for your inquiry regarding the use of Terragen for educational purposes.

First and foremost, please do not use Terragen Classic, aka Terragen 0.9, for the main reason that it is no longer supported and we can't guarantee it will work on modern operating systems.  Even if it works under Windows 10, there's no guarantee it will work under Windows 11, etc.

Instead we recommend that you apply on behalf of your educational institution for an educational license of Terragen 4.  Below is the URL to the application forms, just choose the one that's appropriate to your situation and include any documentation/links for our review.  There are quite literally hundreds of educational institutions using Terragen as part of their teaching curriculum.

We look forward to receiving your application, and if you have any further questions please contact us at registrations@planetside.co.uk
