This must be vary old ice indeed for the time taken to build up those different layers like that and the accumulation of enough snow to build the needed pressure to build up the compression forces required to form that thickness of ice. I would be interesting to know what each of those layers are comprised of, this could be undertaken by landing a small drilling party by helicopter on that berg with a core drill and taking core samples, any of the nations with survey bases in the region could do it as could the Antarctic Survey and such work is permitted under the Antarctic Treaty as long as the drilling nation shears any data gathered with the rest of the scientific community, as under International Law ice core data is considered to be the heritage of mankind.

Of course the above might not happen as teams in that region have limited time, busy work loads with predefined objectives form them to carry out and limited funds for a given year, however it would be nice to know!
