I had an idea yesterday afternoon for making a fortress/fortified village...

While watching an episode of Discovery Channel's Biker Buildoff, I put down a few rough sketches in PhotoShop and 3DsMax, using the psd as reference in the top view.

Here are the two results, both not very elaborate just some ideas.

The big block is a sort of castle or nobleman's house. On the other side of the road is the market place, close to the entrance of the city. The market is connected to a warehouse, which is connected to the docks, which recieve the goods directly from trading ships on the river.

Along the river, next to the nobleman's house is the shipyard where ships are built for trading and fishing.
On the other side of the river will be a smith, stables, bakery, baracks, and 2 other buildings.

I need ideas for those last two. I haven't decided yet which block will be what, so please give your ideas.

(Someone suggested a mill with a waterwheel, which is a very nice idea! Remember that the farmers, hunters, miners and lumberjacks all live outside of the fortress and only seek reffuge in time or war.)

Furthermore, should the walls be open where the river enters the village, or should I make gates? Gates are safer against intruders, but harder for ships to get through...

It's all based on games as Settlers and Age of Empires and the like... This has the advantage that I have some reference, and that I'm not likely to forget what I planned (which happens way to often to me..).

What do you think?

I think you try to do something for which TG2 is not designed! There are other software better suited to this kind of achievement.
Good luck!

Great idea for a scene there. I think this is well within the bounds of Terragen although most of the modeling will have to be done externally. The referances your using, "Age of Empires" etc. probably wont help you that much, they're VERY idealised and using a isometric projection, not realistic at all. Take a look at some of the history and archeology sites for more detailed inspiration and remember that real cities, vilages, ports and towns have a LOT of individual elements to them. You could take your plan and make it 10 times bigger and it would still represent only a small settlement!! You'll have to do some extensive modeling and texturing. Good luck and I look forward to seeing the finished result :)

Yeah, I know the games are not realisticly scaled at all, and there should be way more detail to all the aspects, and I also know these little scetches are WAY to big on buildings in relation to the river and a human figure... this was just a basic setup.

I need a lot more buildings, and I'll probably not model them all myself. But those that I do will have to have some good reference images. Does anyone know a good site, except for Google?

I have made this in 3D studion Max, and will use terragen only when the buildings are done. Import the objects (probably in parts due to the material limit) and then find a few nice POV's

I found a site recently with a great number of very nice medieval buildings you could use for this, if I find the link Ill post it for you.

Oh, that would be Great gregsandor!

I found some on Meshbox, but more is better!!

Ah, I got those allready, but thanks for the trouble anyway.

I'd like to have more seperate buildings, like houses, warehouses, marketplace, smith, baker, etc.
