Resolution for printing

I'm thinking of printing some images out. How do I work out at what resolution I need to render at for a certain size paper. For instance if I want to print out to A3 what's the minimal resolution I would need to render at without the quality suffering? Is there some kind of calculation I can use to work this out depending on the size of the print? If I render really high res it won't do any harm but will take ages to render, render to low and image will suffer.

"dots per inch" on your printer multiplied by inches of your desired print = pixels.

for example, a 300 dpi print on an 8x10 sheet is:

300 * 8 = 2400

by

300 * 10 = 3000

or

2400x3000 pixels

you can probably get away with 240dpi - depends on how close you are going to be to the finished piece to view it I guess.

so 240-300 DPI you reckon will be ok then? For some larger prints I think I might wait for the multithread version, could be in for some long renders otherwise  ;D

Thanks guys

yeah 300dpi is the standard for prints
