Anchoring a view

Is there any way of anchoring a camera view to a specific point, so that you could then rotate the camera about that point?? I ask because I want to make renders of a mountain top from a number of angles, and it's a bit fiddly and imprecise using the controls. Thanks!

Try using the Navigation controls to the top right of the preview window. This can rotate the camera about its own origin, alternatively just type in your required coordinates to the camera node.

Beneath the preview window there are controls to set 'free orbit' 'lock to' orbits and various other settings. You can lock on to any object in the scene by selecting from a list or you can set the lock-on point by clicking an area in the preview window once the lock-on tool has been activated. I don't think it's exactly called 'lock-on' but the controls are there to do what you are asking.

EDIT: It's just called 'FP' to select by clicking, the tool tip doesn't say what the full name is. I imagine it means 'fixed point' or some such.

Thanks Dandelo, that would seem to be the way to go. Unfortunately, when I try it, I get as far as selecting an area and then I'm stumped - how do you then make the camera orbit that point? Using the navigation controls just acts as if there were no selected point. I would assume there would be some specific command or check box in the camera settings that would then allow it to orbit, but I've been unable to discover this so far  :-[ Would one of the Planetside staff care to comment on how this process is intended to work??

Once you select your point, use the alt+MB controls instead of the camera control panel. I rarely use the control panel unless I'm just fine tuning a view or something. It seems to work fine with the keyboard shortcut controls, for me anyway.

Many thanks. Is there a list of keyboard shortcuts anywhere? What, for example, is "alt + MB"?

"alt + MB" = ALT-key + MouseButton

Normally it is stated LMB or RMB (Left- or RightMouseButton).

And you can also set your own custom mouse/key controls in the 'customize bindings' section, in the preferences menu.

Yes, sorry 'MB' just means mouse button, cheers TU.

Go to the Help menu and open the Mouse and Key Settings dialog. This shows all the mouse settings and key shortcuts. These can be changed in the Input Settings preference panel and can also be customised.

Jo

Oooohhhh! More documentation! Thanks, Jo!

EDIT: Ahhh, I think I've read all this before. I thought it was new.

Thanks TangledUniverse and Dandelo - have now tried it and it works like a charm. And thanks to Jo for the info.
