Is it possible making a big tsunami with paint mode?

I'm trying to paint waves onto the lake object and then displace linked to paint shader but instead making a wave I get a hole in the water. Is it possible to paint waves onto the water? Thank you John Morris.

Try inverting your displacement multiplier in the displacement shader that you're using for the wave.
