Here is a new project I've been working on for a little while now.  Dirt.  How exciting, eh?  This is an attempt at creating a believable procedural dirt texture viewed at very small scales.  In this image the camera is under 80mm from the ground and the puddle is less than half a meter in width.  Any thoughts or suggestions?

Very nice, very realistic.
I only think that this rich, fertile kind of dirt you are reproducing here consists of a lot of things when you get close to it, fragments of plants, living roots, little amounts of sand, Insects if you want...
it won´t stay "clean" for a long time, something will start to grow in it sooner or later.
When you get that diversity, you got it!

would make some great roots, if you made it tiny and pale.

I am looking forward to what comes of this,

Best regards,

Very nice work so far. You've done a great job at getting all of the colors of the dirt, and you've got it at a nice scale, too. I think that you should try to get some more variation in both the size and shape of the clumps, especially the ones on the lower left corner. This is definitely on the right track, though.

Dirt and vegetation are great.  The water bank on the right side looks too straight to be in nature.
So this is Disney World.  Can we live here?

This is looking great so far. The closer parts to the water need reflectivity so it looks like mud. Also agree about adding some dead organic matter in the dirt.

Great suggestions, thanks!  It will be tricky to create a root like surface layer, but I will certainly see what I can come up with.

Yeh, it looks really fertile. I can imagine that claggy soil sucking the wellies right off your feet.

I hope I realise I don't exist before I apparently die.

Hannes

That looks really great!
I agree that there could be a little more variation in the mud. Maybe the cloud reflection in the water is a little bit disturbing.
The grass is very natural. All in all it remains me of some places I played when I was a kid.
