Hi guys

Well.... I'm working on my website and I want it to fit the screen for most viewers.
My display resolution is 1600x1200 and the site works well with this, but I don't know what the most common resolution is. That's why I have started this topic. I want to know your screen resolution :)

Same as Suarav. Although I've got a 22" and a 20", don't know if that matters when they're the same resolution.
Figured out how to do clicky signatures

1440*900. I would recommend that you make sure your website fits on 1280 wide, and if possible 1024.

By that you mean 1280x1024 right? I can do that :)

So far it looks like it is best to make a fit for 1280x1024.

But, everything depends on the audience.  Graphics people all have big monitors and large resolutions.  Whoa.
So this is Disney World.  Can we live here?

1280x1024 on this monitor, 1600x1200 on my workstation monitor, 1280x800 on my laptop, and 1280x1024 at work. ;D

I think it is generally good practice to design for 1024x768 or at most 1280x1024. This is not only because the majority of people still do not use higher than 1280x1024, but also because many people do not necessarily browse with their web browser "maximized" or full-screen. This is a surprise to me as I hate not having my browser maximized, but apparently this is common.

Additionally, even if everyone did have wide screen monitors, the reality is that the most comfortable reading and information review format for people is shorter (width) blocks of text, with vertical scrolling. This is due to the need to move our eyes a certain distance to read, and the limitations of peripheral vision. No one wants to have to turn their head to read! And if your eyes continually have to traverse a greater horizontal distance when reading, you will experience eye fatigue and discomfort more quickly. This is not necessarily a consciously recognized issue of course, but in practical use you can quickly see how much people favor less wide screen information presentation. Movies and TV, on the other hand, are interesting in wide screen because we do not need exact identification of all screen elements, and engating our peripheral vision is more immersive. Most web pages are not aiming for "immersion" and so it's a bad idea to try to take advantage of all screen real estate of a wide screen monitor.

That's my 2 (or 3, or 4...) cents...

I actually meant 1024 wide if possible ;). Otherwise I would recommend Oshyan's advice.

1920x1200.

However I often browse the net on a little tablet PC with 1024x768. Most pages work OK with this unless I turn it to portrait mode. Best to make the pages work with most resolutions. I'd say make it work with 1024x768 (or the widescreen equivalent) because smaller portable PCs such as sub note books are going to be very popular.

Thanks a lot for all the great info guys. I think I will use 1024 for the width and from there decide what looks best for the height.

Here is a screenshot of what I have so far for anyone interested. As you can see, I have no name for the site yet and the gallery is pretty boring ::), but this is just a test. I have never done this before.
Also the site design is based on something a saw little over a year ago. So it's not all my ideas, but I knew from the moment I saw it that that's what I want.
