I don't do space stuff normally but here's one using Rarchers splitting technique for larger models (thanks Ryan). Just a doodle really while waiting for TG2.
The models are both from http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/ , and the terrain is a mixture of a heightfield of Utah and a MOLA map from
http://pds-geosciences.wustl.edu/missions/mgs/megdr.html

One thing I noticed that's not right is the white band at the very top of the second planet. Any ideas?

I think the small craters are a nice touch and to me they look pretty realistic!
Maybe the surface could use some more color-variation, some more grays perhaps.
Also you could try to lower the sun's angle to make the lighting a bit more dramatic and make the image look less flat.
The lander lacks a bit of specularity here and there, which the other model has.

About the planet, have you projected the texture through camera or sphere mapped to the object ?

I'd say add more light, but d-uhh-errr.     This technique for models looks like a good idea...until we get something more useful.
