just in case it's not on the list, I'd like to ask for 16 bit image map support for non-sgi formats, such as
tiff. I've downloaded the sgi photoshop plugin, and it works fairly well, until I try saving fairly large files,
then it runs out of ram and won't save. I notice the new verision supports 32 bit, the bummer being larger
files, and painting on 32 bit files is still not easily done.

thanks,

Brian

while I'm at it...

the ability to store renders in a persistent frame buffer would be awesome as well, i.e. pixar's "it"
a running catalog of renders that can be flipped back and forth for comparisons, with a little note attached to the bottom
to type in text of what was changed... even more of a dream would be an added feature the ILM buffer used to have: for each image,
it actually kept a copy of all the parameters of all the nodes used to complete that render. one could dump the params from a favorite image
back into all the shaders (except any added after that image was made, of course...)

just, ya know, wishing out loud.

Brian

ohh I like the sound of that. There was talk a long time ago about being able to flip to older renders in the render window so that you could compare images, but it's not been implemented. I like the idea of the image storing the parameters so you can see exactly what settings were used for each image.

oh that makes much more sense ;) from the thread title i thought you wanted to run tg2 on a super old computer that had a 16bit processor ;)

We have plans to address both of these things at some point in the future. The render view should eventually become a more powerful tool, with control of post effects, some form of built-in image browsing/comparison, etc. Support of more image formats is also planned, though I don't really see the problem with 32 vs. 16 bit TIFF support - you can always just convert to 32bit after you paint the file.

Kewl,

yep, you can just save the image out 32 bit, it's just another step, and quite a bit of overhead to pay file size wise, especially if you are talking about
matte paintings which are typically done 2-4 times final render size... I'm guessing TG2 doesn't do any dynamic image map loading(mip mapping planned?), basically loading
the whole image into ram at the start of rendering?

oh, while i'm at it.. somebody else mentioned render layers... is that planned for a later release? or some type of renderman arbitrary output variable scheme?

Also wanted to say "kudos" to the dev team:  I'm loving this program. I want to see it become as production-friendly as possible.

Yes, we definitely want to improve overall support for production pipelines and interoperability. Multiple render passes are one of those features to add.
