It depends on how you need to adjust it. If you simply need to "rotate" it around the planet, you could shift the texture and wrap the end to the other side, which should work. If you need to otherwise rotate the texture, that's more problematic and requires remapping as you said.

To user spherical projection on a planet, you should move the planet so its centre is at 0,0,0 or set the Y position of your image map (in the Image Map Shader) to whatever the planet's centre is (as in the screenshot below). By default this is -6.378e6.
