Channel Files

What are channel files and, better yet, how would I use a channel file? Or maybe I would rather know why I might need to use a channel file.
So this is Disney World. Can we live here?

"Channel" files (.chan) are a data format used by the "Nuke" compositing program. They hold motion data and in TG2's case can be used for exchanging motion data with other applications. So they are specifically useful for handling animation - not particularly useful if you're not animating.

Thanks, Oshyan. Will become useful, in my case.
