Question @all: are you able to see the poll results up to now once you've cast your vote? I don't see any bars with numbers behind them here :'(

No, the results are hidden until the poll is over which is tomorrow.

Voted :) Good choice of image to replicate, The geometric nature of the "real" one lends it's self to the TG one.

Ok, I've now voted. I think I'm right, the terrain and clouds in my choice have swayed my vote... Probably wrong, mind!

Honestly, if you told me they were both rendered in TG, I'd believe it. We'll see tommorow...

Well, most people (73 out of 83) figured out which one was the Terragen image.  It was Image 1 (the one on the left).  It didn't turn out as well as I had hoped but it is better than 83 to 0. I'm guessing that the main giveaway was the lack of roads between each of the squares.

Soon I will post the image larger with more info about it. - Devin

Eeerrrr... yeah, the roads, that was it ::)... not really, I didn't even notice them. My decision was based on the clouds. good poll.
I just need to tweak that texture a bit more...

You have to remember most of us know terragen quite well and excel at detecting it.  For me it was a mix of things.  First and most noticeable was the clouds, then how the haze was treated in the image, and lastly and what sealed the deal was the terrain.  In some of the non tree squares that arn't fully flat theres some very obvious fractal terrain.

nvseal

The clouds gave it away for me too.

in truth, there was something not quite right about picture 1 - so I went with feeling not any sense of technque or knowledge
- sometimes you get lucky :D

Fractal lines in the terrain. Great thread, we need more like this.

For me it was the atmospherics as a first sign, the terrain as a second and the roads to finish it off. That sounds like I could spot it from miles away, but to be fair, I spent a lot of time looking at both images!
So this was a very successful test!
