This image was very difficult due to my having to make some of the objects you see such as the saguaro that literally kept me on pins and needles for a month and a half. Any C&C input that might help overcome problems in this effort or just expressing your opinion will be well received. The small size of this image is what I understand is required by the contest, and I am sorry if that is a problem for the viewer.

Interesting composition, but somehow the image looks flat. I'd try tweaking the lightsource to give a more dramatic effect (lower angle and strength) and try increasing the contrast in the final render. Looks very promising though.

The mule deer model is great, and the cactus is fine, but I think you could stand to lose at least half of the bushes, particularly in the foreground, and the other half would benefit from some kind of colour adjustment, as there is something about that light green that really clashes with the underlying landscape colour. Also, having looked at a few pictures of the Sonoran desert online, the sand colour would benefit from added grey.

Hope this helps, and hope to see the final version in the gallery.

P.S. - the image itself can be a lot wider and taller, as long as you're prepared to decrease the quality of the JPEG a bit.

The image looks washed out. There is too much salt brush, but I would add more cactus. Did you use a distribution shader? If so, the color needs to be changed. I would also use the Blend By Shader input to point to the sand surface.
