Some stuff I was playing with. Just a proof of concept, though. Apologies for the crap quality building.

Interesting concept, keep going. I'd really like to see Terragen used in more architectural viz.
How did you get your plants to line up so well? Even with massive masks and very small plants I still find that plants tend to "slip" or offset themselves from the area bounded by the mask.

Thank you. It's functions, no image maps for placement. Search the grid function I posted somewhere here.
Yes sometimes objects populate slightly outside the boundaries, so you just need to make another mask that is smaller than the area the plants are supposed to be in. If you give it a color higher than 1, like 3, you give the populator a very high probability to place an instance exactly there. However you also need to use a relatively small object distance in the populator to ensure the populator sampling "hits" your white mask spot.
Cheers,
Frank

I think using a color mask may be quicker and easier, at least for me. I'm still struggling with functions. I know what most of them do, but how they work in Terragen 2 does not seem to correspond to the algebra/trig I've used in other 3D programs. Keep trying...

Functions eh.... pure mystery to me. I kind of understand simple things, but putting them together to get what I want.... well that's just a bit beyond my level. When I was at school I was only interested in sports and art, maths was too simple to be taught this stuff. bummer.

AND great ideas Frank... very Taj Mahal.
I just need to tweak that texture a bit more...

This is very interesting.. I never imagined Terragen 2 for architectural usage.. I hope to see more of this kind..  ;)
Learning history and science, wait,
Knowing that, will that put food on my plate?
Yeah, can I walk into McDonald's, into the counter,
And tell them you can make limestone from gunpowder,
Will they give me a cheeseburger if I know that shit?

Both images are a pleasure to view. Working with plants is a challenge making them look 'soft' where they need to be. I think the key is 'translucency' adjustment, especially in low sun lighting.

Very good effort, I really like the lighting in the night render!

Great idea, Frank.  Better textures for the building and pavement would make this superb.
So this is Disney World.  Can we live here?
