MGebhart ,nice timing
The object has no smoothing problems. Is it made of triangles or squares? In what kind of way did you import it?

Nice day for flying. It will be great to see this as a finished image. A little banking of the plane would add some feeling of motion.

The position of the plane is much better in the second one! However IMO I think the motion blur could be decreased a bit, but it does give a very nice sense of motion.

The new render is much better. I agree that there is too much motion blur, but it is more exciting!

by the way - I am not sure, but it almost looks as the motion blur has a slightly different direction compared to the plane. But that could be my aging eyes ;-)

All good suggestions. As soon as I free up some time I'll jump right on it.
Thanks.
