I recognized this image immidietly and mostly because the photographer (Wally Pacholka) took several amazing images from this site. One of them being picture of the day at nasa site: http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap080929.html  The guy also has is own website: http://www.brightnightgallery.com/

Unknown origin?  This has been well documented as an un-used set from the movie Spinal Tap.
The band requested a camp fire scene and sadly they got the scale all wrong, yet one more time.
